I Have Heard the Call, and I Will Go
My Journey to Cambodia
When I was 19 years old, I received the call to missions. I had gone on a mission trip with my church, and it changed my life forever. During that time, I felt a deep desire to minister to people who had never heard the gospel. Although I drifted away from the Lord for a season, when I returned to Him, I felt that same call again—stronger than ever.
Almost three years ago, when some of our leaders from The Well visited Cambodia, they returned with stories and images that stirred my heart. I remember seeing a picture of a Khmer child, and in that moment, something broke inside of me. I began interceding for the Khmer people, and God planted a deep love in my heart for Cambodia.
Not long after, an opportunity to go opened up. The moment I stepped onto Cambodian soil changed my life forever. Visiting the Killing Fields wrecked my heart—I could not stop crying. In intercession, I had often heard the cries of children, and in that place of deep pain, I heard them again. It was as if the children were crying out for a different future—for freedom, healing, and the chance to know Him.
On my second trip, I fell even more in love with the people. I saw lives transformed by the gospel, emotional healing, and deliverance. The Khmer people still carry deep wounds from the genocide of the 1970s, when nearly 3 million lives were taken. But God showed me that He came to bring them not only life, but abundant joy. Spending time with children, families, and entire communities, I knew in my heart: they need to encounter the Father’s love in a personal and tangible way.
After that trip, I knew God was calling me to Cambodia permanently. I entered a process with my church, meeting with leaders, elders, and counselors to prepare and discern this calling. With much prayer and confirmation, the leadership approved me, and I made a covenant commitment to go.
Right now, I am in the process of raising funds, downsizing my belongings, and preparing my heart. If it were possible, I would go tomorrow—but I am trusting God’s perfect timing. I know He is faithful to provide and to send me at just the right moment.
